Raj Koothrappali – Raj Koothrappali
Rajesh Ramayan” Raj” Koothrappali, Ph.D. is a fictional character on the CBS television series The Big Bang Theory , portraying British Indian actor Kunal Nayyar. Raj is based on a computer programmer who co-created the show, Bill Prady, knew back when he was a programmer himself.
Raj is Howard Wolowitz’s (Simon Helberg) best friend, with whom Raj shares what Nayyar calls a ‘bromance’, although the relationship is often made awkward by Raj’s metrosexuality. Raj works as an astrophysicist in the physics department at Caltech. He had selective mutism which did not allow him to speak to women outside his family when he was under the influence of alcohol (or medication) until the season 6 finals. Along with Howard, Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter, Raj is one of the four characters in each episode of The Big Bang Theory.
Rajesh, who is usually called Rajoder only by his surname Koothrappali, is from New Delhi, India. However, he disdains Indian food, and his knowledge of Indian culture and Hinduism is often rebuked by Sheldon, who is better at speaking Hindi than he is at seeing it. He was born into a wealthy family and has five siblings, one of whom is Priya, a former on-off girlfriend of Leonard. Raj is usually seen as a layered combination of a wearing printed shirt and sweater vest under a track top-style windcheater with khakis or cargo pants and skate shoes. White Slipssind Raj underwear of choice. Raj wore a red cap in the pilot episode, but did not wear a headgear on a regular basis for the rest of the running series. Between season one and eleven, Raj styled his naturally curly hair with hair gel “while trying to mix”.
Raj joins in games Halo online and trading card games with his friends, and has even claimed to have experienced gambling addiction of the past. It was revealed in “The Monster Isolation” that Raj did at least part of his higher education at the University of Cambridge, where he discovered his interest in astrophysics.
While in general Raj more patients with Sheldon than Leonard, Howard or Penny, Sheldon is completely blind to this and even casually cuts him off as a friend once.
Another recurring joke is his metrosexuality, which manifests itself for media in his appreciation generally associated with female patrons, such as the novel Eat, Pray, Love, the TV series Sex and the City and films by Sandra Bullock. This has led the close to him to think that he is somewhat feminine (as in ‘The Closure Alternative’) and others mistakenly conclude that he is gay (a theory mentioned by his sister in ‘The Herb Garden Germination’, which has been held by members of her family), which he denies the rule (even his metrosexuality in ‘The Transporter Disorder’) claimed, but which Howard often teases him about.
One of the greatest personality Macken Raj is his tendency to speak or act inappropriately, often getting him into trouble or leading to an angry reaction of landing by whoever he has upset. This was particularly evident when he was under the influence of alcohol, which could lead one to catch-22, as he had been drinking alcohol for years even having to talk to a woman, but the alcohol led him to say the wrong things. Suddenly, as Leonard and Penny are having sex in their hotel room, Raj kicks and goes unperturbed into Sheldon’s recently cleared bed to climb, not even aware of what he has interrupted. On another occasion he had openly discussed he had crushed openly on Penny and Bernadette right in front of them, both of which has caused discomfort and hurt unknowingly Amy’s feelings when he admits that he never had an eye on me as well (despite Penny and Bernadette’s best efforts to make him aware of this act).
When socializing with his friends, despite his Indian accent, Raj becomes known for slang with and using the word “dude”, although on some occasions he appears not to understand American slang. He speaks fluent Hindi, but according to Sheldon, his native English.
Until the sixth season finale, Raj’s main characteristic was his inability, or inability, to speak to unrelated women, of a medical condition known as selective mutism. On the show, this was implied by Dr. Beverly Hofstadter, Leonard’s mother. Raj also stated that he has selective mutism in the episode “The Cornhusker Vortex. Raj was in the presence of women only when they were part of a crowd, when he had been drinking alcoholic beverages (or believes he was), when he was under the influence of other women, and when he was under the influence of other women.
