Sheldon Cooper’s mother– you didn’t see this coming!
Strictly believing Christian, loving and the only one Sheldon Cooper can tame: his mother Mary. While she can only be seen now and then in ” The Big Bang Theory”, we will see her more often in the prequel spin-off “Young Sheldon”. For there Sheldon is a nine-year-old boy who lives with his siblings at home with his mother and father.

Already after the first episode the critics agreed that the role of Mary had a big part in the warmth of the new series. Although Sheldon is certainly not the easiest of children, she cares for him touchingly and loves him idolatrously. If his siblings, teachers or classmates attack him or make fun of him, she always defends him. In this way she navigates her son through life and makes sure that nothing happens to him.

In the mother series ” TBBT” Sheldon’s mother doesn’t have many appearances, but still the fans love her. She’s the only one who really has Sheldon under control. In the most complicated situations, she still gets through to her son. Remember when Sheldon’s Arctic expedition results turned out to be fake? Sheldon got depressed and moved back to Texas. Mary got the nerds to make up. Or, when Sheldon and Amy broke up, she was also the one who brought them back together. Mary Cooper is also a very smart woman. Instead of physics, however, her talent lies exactly where Sheldon sometimes lacks: in social intelligence.
The actresses of Sheldon’s mother
Initially, fans thought that perhaps the “original” Sheldon mother, Laurie Metcalf, could take on the role of the mother in “Young Sheldon. But it turned out quite differently: The makers had thought up a special surprise here and show Zoe Perry of all people in the role of the younger Mary Cooper. And in real life she is the daughter of Laurie Metcalf.
Laurie Metcalf was born in Illinois in 1955 and after completing her anthropology studies became part of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. She gained international fame through her role in “Roseanne”. In 1992 and the following two years she was awarded an Emmyin in the category “Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series”, as well as for small roles in “Desperate Housewives” and “Monk”. Since 2007 she is part of the cast of “The Big Bang Theory”. Together with her now ex-husband, Jeff Perry, she had her daughter Zoe in 1984.
We have also seen her in small roles, for example in “The Family” or the “Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off “Private Practice”. But since she is already hailed by the critics as one of the series’ favorites after the first episode of “Young Sheldon”, we will certainly see more of her in the future. According to Perry it’s not true that she only got the role because of her mother. She also had to participate in an audition, she said in an interview. To prepare herself, she had watched “The Big Bang Theory” episodes with her mother intensively.
